Converting the Dreamweaver Template From an Older Version

The 1.1 version of the Dreamweaver template has no changes in the XHTML that produces the layout of the page. It adds an optional, configurable search at the top, which is in addition to the UW search. The only other change involves a simplification of the Template Properties.

If you have been using version 1 of the template, and are satisfied with it, there is no reason for you to change to this newer (1.1) version of the template. However, if you have created only a small number of pages, you might wish to switch.

Because the template has different regions, the conversion process is not as simple as saving a new version of the template with the old name, and letting Dreamweaver update your pages.

Brute Force Conversion Method

The simplest method of conversion will work reasonably well if you have perhaps twenty or fewer pages.

  1. Copy your existing site into a subfolder of your site.
  2. Create your new template.
  3. Create a new page based on this template.
  4. Edit page 1 of your existing site.
  5. Copy the following items from the existing page 1, and paste them into the new page.
    1. The page title
    2. The Topic Title
    3. The document text
  6. Set the appropriate template properties.
  7. Save the new file with the same name as the existing page 1.

Repeat steps 3 through 7 for each page of your site.
